Paper in Adoption Quarterly
Dr. Whitten
's paper (with Dr. Scott Weaver) on adoptive families is in the current issue (Jan. 2011) of
Adoption Quarterly, the primary journal for professionals in adoptions. Here is a summary of the paper:
This study analyzed information from 701 adoptive families with children 13 and over. We found that adolescents with stronger parent-child relationships were less likely to skip school, be suspended, or to be in trouble with the police--just as we would expect, whether in adoptive or nonadoptive families. This pattern was true even if the teens had experienced abuse and/or neglect before they were adopted. And in the families with better relationships, adolescents had higher grades in language arts. For transracially adopted teens, the association between strong family relationships and healthy development was the same.
